Birthdays in isolation have a very different feel to your average birthday. Amid our new normal of social distancing, birthday get-togethers both small and large have been called off once again, leaving many birthday boys and girls, their parents, partners and friends to celebrate at home. While you may not be able to throw the party you had planned, there's no reason to skip the festivities altogether.
If you or someone you love has a birthday coming up, we have you covered! We have compiled the top 10 ways to celebrate your birthday while social distancing in Frankston City. From virtual birthday parties to sending your friend a delivery right to their doorstep, there are plenty of ways to make sure those closest to you still feel loved on their special day.
# 1 - Host a virtual birthday party!
Just because we can't physically see each other, that doesn't mean we can't party! Why not set up a meeting on Zoom and invite all your friends for a virtual happy hour or host a Houseparty with the crew!
Tell everyone to 'bring a plate' and enjoy some party food and drinks together. For something extra fun, why not arrange a fun virtual game such as trivia, BINGO or heads up?
Hot Tip: Tell the guest of honour to sign on a little later than everyone else and sing 'Happy Birthday' when they log on.
# 2 - Get something sweet delivered.
A great way to support our local businesses in these hard times is by placing an order for delivery. Choose a local bakery or a restaurant with stellar desserts and send something sweet like a cake, box of cookies or donuts. For a full list of local delivery businesses, check out our local love blog - 'feel at home buy local'.

# 4 - Make a 'Happy Birthday' video or dance!
We may not be able to have a laugh in person, but that doesn't mean we can't entertain one another with some creative and funny birthday videos.
From learning a choreographed dance to putting on a play or singing a song! The stage is all yours to create some truly amazing memories this birthday.
If you're still stuck for ideas, here's a few we prepared earlier:
- Write a song
- Perform a dance routine
- Create a video montage
- Perform a scene from a movie
- Create a funny TikTok video
- Create a photo timeline with images from their childhood
# 5 - Treasure hunt for birthday presents
Not being able to go anywhere special to celebrate can be tough for kids, so why not stretch out the birthday fun and create a treasure map of your house with clues to the location of the presents?
Hot tip: To make it even more tricky for the older kids, include maths and problem solving clues which can double for home schooling!
# 6 - Let there be cheese!
Is there a truer love than a love of cheese? Love comes in many forms though.... shredded...sliced...melted. It's okay if cheese is your best friend. Enough cheesy quotes? Well lucky for you these local businesses have enough cheese to show that special someone how loved and appreciated they are this birthday.

# 7 - For the kids: Let Playschool's eBirthday episode give you inspiration
If your child is celebrating their birthday in isolation, no doubt you have had many conversations explaining why they can't see their friends and family to celebrate. Playschool have created a fantastic episode to help guide your little one through the realities of their 'e-birthday'. Kiya's Excellent eBirthday is available to watch on the ABC Kids website by clicking HERE.
It is important to build understandings of online safety right from the start. Join Teo, Leah and the Play School crew as they team up with the eSafety Commissioner in this special episode exploring our National early childhood online safety messages.
# 8 - Go old school with a handmade letter or card!
Remember the days before Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, texting or even mobile phones where you would have to hand write a birthday card or letter to wish those closest to you a happy birthday? Well let's bring it back!
You can get some inspiration from many sources online on how to create some amazing handmade cards with recycled materials, including this article featuring 13 Card Making Tips.
A letter is such a special and rare gift to receive. You could even include some local newspaper clippings to create a mini time capsule to remember this important time in history.
# 9 - What did Hubble see on your birthday?
The Hubble Space Telescope explores the universe 24 hours a day, 7 days a week searching for distant stars, galaxies and planets. That means it has observed some fascinating cosmic wonder every day of the year, including on your birthday!
What did Hubble look at on your birthday? Click here and enter your month and date to find out.
Hot tip: Check out what Hubble got up to on its 30th birthday.
# 10 - Bring the dinner reservation to your living room
